The first International Canoe Federation Canoe Ocean Racing World Cup of the season is set to be staged in Villajoyosa, Spain with a stellar field of paddlers comprising of reigning world champions ready to make their mark.

Germany’s Gordan Harbrecht and South Africa’s Kira Bester, who both secured world titles last year, are among a star-studded line-up.

Other leading paddlers in action will be South Africans Sean Rice, Matthew Fenn and Ulvard Hart and Spanish pair Chloe Bunnett and Walter Bouzan.

As well as providing the perfect stage for the season opener, the event is poised to act as a “crucial benchmark” on the road to the 2026 ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships which will be held at the Spanish venue.

Known as the EuroChallenge, the annual race in Villajoyosa has long been recognised as a cornerstone in the international Canoe Ocean Racing calendar.

Marian Sarbu, Chair of the ICF Canoe Ocean Racing Committee, says the EuroChallenge is “distinguished by its tradition, consistency and outstanding organisational standards”.

“As the opening event of the 2025 ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Cup series, the EuroChallenge will set the tone for a dynamic and highly competitive season,” said Mr Sarbu.

“Beyond its competitive significance, this year's edition serves as a crucial benchmark, acting as a preparatory platform for the 2026 ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships, which will take place at the same venue.

“Athletes and organizers alike will treat this edition as a full-scale rehearsal, ensuring that every aspect meets the highest standards of international competition.”

Racing is due to take place from May 1 to 3 with the men’s and women’s surfski single and mixed surfski double all held on the same day.

“The level of competition, coupled with the variety of Mediterranean racing conditions, will offer an ideal environment for athletes to assess their form, refine strategies, and test equipment at the outset of the season,” added Mr Sarbu.

“The organisers are fully committed to delivering an event that adheres to all technical and logistical standards established by the International Canoe Federation, ensuring a world-class experience for all participants.

“With excellent environmental conditions, robust international participation, and its critical role in preparations for the upcoming World Championships, the EuroChallenge XVI promises to be a landmark event, highlighting the very best of Canoe Ocean Racing on the global stage.”
