The Philippine Canoe and Kayak Federation (PCKF) launched the first-ever Level 1 Dragon Boat coaching seminar in Manila last month which saw 30 participants from 16 club teams.

Adding to the legacy of the 2024 International Canoe Federation Dragon Boat World Championships in Puerto Princesa, PCKF hopes the initiative increases paddle sports coaching standards across the nation, with three more legs planned in Puerto Princesa, Cebu, and Davao in the coming months.

Held at the Philippine Sports Commission, the first leg of the seminar focused on a research-driven, holistic curriculum with four core modules.

They include Dragon Boat biomechanics and sports injuries led by Ma. Crisanta P. Prieto, paddling techniques by PCKF President Leonora Escollante, sports nutrition by Romela Dee B. Candoliza, and psychosocial factors in coaching by Prof. Michele Joan D. Valbuena, PhD.

National coach Duchess Francine Co and holistic wellness practitioner Rona Joy Bulaong also played a crucial role in the seminar.

“This seminar marks a turning point in PCKF’s mission to transform coaching into a science-backed profession,” said Co.

“By integrating biomechanics, nutrition science, and mental mastery with paddling techniques, we are empowering coaches to shape athletes not just for performance, but for lifelong excellence.”

“This isn’t just a seminar — it’s the start of a national movement,” said Escollante.

PCKF President Leonora Escollante led one of the sessions

“We are laying the foundation for a new era of Filipino coaching—rooted in science, inspired by purpose, and dedicated to developing athletes as well-rounded individuals, not just competitors.

“As a woman in sports leadership, I am proud that this initiative also paves the way for greater representation of women in coaching. Empowering more women to lead is not just progress—it’s essential to building a stronger and more inclusive future for Philippine sports.”

The Philippines won 11 titles at the Dragon Boat World Championships last year to top the medals table and seal qualification for The World Games 2025.

Before the flagship event, the coastal city of Puerto Princesa ran the “Paddle Together for Climate Action” campaign to raise awareness of the climate crisis facing the planet.

Last year, the country's President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared the fourth week of October of every year as “Moving Forward Paddling Week Philippines.”
