Canoe Sprint competition drew to a close in spectacular style at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games as New Zealand’s Lisa Carrington made history, Czechia’s Josef Dostal powered to victory and Canada’s Katie Vincent came out on top.

Here are some quotes from the day.

Lisa Carrington (New Zealand)

"It’s been a long journey and just constant pursuit of growth and learning and I guess something I thought about today is that these Olympics was over so quickly. It’s just enjoying the moment. So for me to go out there, it’s about getting it done. It’s a lot of pressure, expectations on myself and honestly I don’t know how I did it. You have to be good in the moment and it’s all the training, practice, working hard through tears and just asking excellence of myself and my team and it’s great to come away with a few great medals this weekend."

Tamara Csipes (Hungary)

“Lisa is amazing but I’m good too. Actually I’m freaking tired. I had less of a break from the semifinal as my semifinal was the last one. So I was a bit nervous about that, but that was all. Actually it was a good race. I’m happy. That was my last Olympics and my last 500 (metres) so I’m actually proud. That was a nice career for me."

Emma Aastrand Jorgensen (Denmark)

"It feels so good. I have worked hard for this. I am so proud of myself right now. It’s three years of hard work and this ends on a really good note."

Josef Dostal (Czechia)

"I had a couple of dreams before these Olympics. Once I was third, once I was second, and (the) third, I won it, the fifth Olympic medal for me. It's very powerful – for me, it means that I can be on the top for so many years. My father told me to enjoy the race. When you win a medal at the Olympic Games with your best friend, it's something crazy. When your fiancee meets you and is the first person to congratulate you, man, that's something amazing. Today, I won a gold medal, but Anezka is my life gold medal."

Adam Varga (Hungary)

"I felt enough power in my arms in the end and I see the time it was faster than Josef and Balint but I couldn’t catch up. They did a very good race. I am very happy with this silver medal. If I am second in every race I compete in, I will be resigned to this. But it (taking the silver medal today) was great.”

Balint Kopasz (Hungary)

"I was very tired the last 250 metres. It was the strongest K1 distance and I had a great tough opponent. The K1 is the most precious for me. I was in very good form mentally and physically and that was very important."

Katie Vincent (Canada)

“It is so crazy. I don’t know what I just did, I am still processing. I am so happy. It was an incredible race by the whole field. First gold. I have always wanted to be an Olympic champion since I was a kid. I can’t believe it right now. I worked so hard for this, (through) so much adversity. I am so grateful to be here.”

Nevin Harrison (United States)

“I saw Canada was number one, and I was hoping it was wrong. But the field is so close and so competitive. At the end of the day, it is that one extra stroke. She had it, and I didn’t. All I can say is congratulations to Katie. I am proud of what I did. I was hoping for gold. But at the end of the day there is nothing you can do.”

Yarisleidis Cirilo Duboys (Cuba)

"I am very happy and very satisfied with the result. I gave it my all - my personal marker. I am happy with it. Before coming, my first objective was qualifying. After that, my objective was to come here and to win."
