A big clean-up operation took place along the banks of the Main River in Frankfurt after the German Canoe Association (DKV) joined forces with an environmental initiative.
The DKV has signed a cooperation agreement with the Clean River Project, sending a clear and visible message about the importance of environmental responsibility and sustainability within the canoeing community.
Winding its way through central Germany, the 525 kilometre-long Main River is the longest tributary of the Rhine, one of the major European rivers.
Around 50 volunteers took part in the effort, collecting plastic waste and other litter from within the local area.
In less than three hours, the group made a significant impact, demonstrating the power of collective action.
Equipped with the project’s distinctive bags, participants gathered and sorted waste, which was later properly disposed of by sustainable waste management company FES Frankfurt.
The partnership is set to focus on a range of initiatives, including joint clean-up campaigns on waterways, public awareness efforts promoting environmentally responsible paddling, and the development of further environmental and educational projects in collaboration with local clubs.
Both organisations have also committed to supporting each other’s communication efforts, working together across websites and social media platforms to amplify their message and encourage wider community engagement.
The cooperation agreement was signed by DKV President Dajana Pefestorff and Clean River Project Chairman Stephan Horch.
“As a sports association with a strong connection to nature, we greatly appreciate the commitment of Stephan and his team,” said Pefestorff.
“Our goal is to preserve the waters we paddle on together for future generations. This partnership is the logical step to combine our passion for canoeing with effective environmental protection.
Horch said: “This is a special moment for us, after years of sporadic collaboration, we are now officially joining forces with the DKV to send an even stronger message about environmental responsibility and sustainability in canoeing.”
Launched in 2005, the Clean River Project is a German environmental organisation dedicated to protecting and restoring river ecosystems through targeted clean-up actions and long-term conservation initiatives.
