The Olympians Commission of New Zealand has been awarded a grant by the World Olympians Association to develop a program for aspiring canoe athletes, to be overseen by Olympian Mike Dawson.

The Rotorua Athlete Development Trust will use the grant to provide funding support for local athletes, to host an outreach day, and to establish a website platform.

The International Canoe Federation welcomed the support of the World Olympians Association to continue the growth of canoeing around the world.

“We have federations, clubs and individuals working hard all around the globe to introduce and develop canoeing,” ICF President Jose Perurena said.

“To receive the recognition of the WOA is very important, and the athletes of Rotorua will benefit substantially from this grant. I am sure that under the guidance of Mike Dawson, this program will produce future Olympians.”

WOA President Joel Bouzou said the grants empower Olympians to deliver projects that help their communities, or support the ongoing development of Olympic athletes. He praised the work of the ICF in promoting canoeing.

“Receiving the international grant award is a positive reflection on the work and ethos of your international federation,” Mr Bouzou said.

“WOA is proud to see Olympians from your sport bringing to life the Olympic values, and wanting to make a difference in the world by leaving a tangible legacy in their community.”
