In a bid to promote gender equity, the Brazilian Canoeing Confederation (CBCa) has created a Coordination of Women in Sport.

The inclusive and strategic project is led by CBCa Vice President Luciana Costa and is aimed at strengthening female participation in all areas, including athletes, coaches, managers, and referees among others.

The initiative also seeks to expand media exposure in national and international competitions.

“One of the biggest challenges for women in sports is gender prejudice, which has historically been shaped to be a predominantly male space,” said Costa, as quoted by CBCa.

“We want to train and support even more coaches, referees and managers in canoeing.

“We will also monitor and report on annual advances in gender equality, in addition to inspiring, empowering and engaging athletes.

“Our goal is to create a support network for girls and women athletes.”

Highlighting the struggles she faced as an athlete, Costa said the initiative will also focus on improving the structure and support offered to women at national events.

In addition, the group will play a crucial role in helping clubs promote conditions that better the performances of athletes.

The CBCa Coordinator will follow the guidelines of the Women in Sport Commission set up by the Brazilian Olympic Committee in 2022.

“I want to see a Brazilian (woman) climb the podium and win the long-awaited Olympic medal,” Costa added.

“I want to leave the legacy of dreaming so that dreams never fade and so that each one follows in search of their goals, without giving up, no matter how big the obstacle is.”
