Spain's Walz glides through to take Gold in Rio
RIO DE JANEIRO - Marcus WALZ (ESP) was a surprise winner in a day of tight racing at Lagoa Stadium on Tuesday.
Fernando PIMENTA (POR) set the early pace in the final of the men's kayak single 1000m, leading at the first two timing points. With 250m to go Murray STEWART (AUS) had moved into first place with Roman ANOSHKIN (RUS) in second.
STEWART and ANOSHKIN were then overtaken by WALZ and Josef DOSTAL (CZE), engaged in a battle in lanes seven and eight which was won by the 21-year-old Spaniard after DOSTAL tired in the closing

Canoe sprint champions cruise through on blistering first day
RIO DE JANEIRO - Under a baking sun at the Lagoa Stadium the first canoe sprint races of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games got underway on Monday, with Olympic champions Sebastian BRENDEL (GER) and Lisa CARRINGTON (NZL) both progressing to their respective finals.
BRENDEL won his men's canoe single (C1) 1000m heat comfortably and CARRINGTON recorded the fastest semifinal time in the women's kayak single (K1) 200m.

Australian young guns gatecrash final at first Olympics
There’s a lot of hype and excitement surrounding an Olympics debut, but for Australian young guns Alyssa Bull and Alyce Burnett it’s all been a bit of a stroll in the park so far.
That’s not to say they aren’t pumped to be in Rio, because they most certainly are. But if you expected them to be a bundle of nerves then you’d be surprised.

Cairns makes the most of Olympic second chance
In Samoa you have look very hard to try and find a kayak anywhere.
The way Anne Cairns tells it, you should save your time. There are no kayaks anywhere in Samoa.
But Samoa has a paddler competing in the canoe sprint competition in Rio, her name is Anne Cairns, and she made her debut on the opening day of competition.
It should be pointed out Cairns calls New Zealand home these days. Her mother is Samoan and Cairns tries to get back there as often as possible.
But not to train. That would be impossible.

Chamaune makes Olympic history for Mozambique
While most of the paddlers were celebrating the calm conditions on the opening day of the Olympic sprint program, Mozambique’s Mussa Chamaune would have been happy if the conditions had been a bit rougher for his historic first paddle in the C1 1000.
Not only was Chamaune making his Olympic debut, it was also the first appearance for Mozambique in canoe sprint.
The millpond conditions were a bit different to what Chamaune is used to.
“Mozambique is very hard, because we don’t train in lakes, we train in the sea,” he said.

Champion canoe sprinters open Rio 2016 account on Lagoa
RIO DE JANEIRO - The first heat of the women's K1 200m event will pit the London 2012 Olympic Games gold and bronze medallists against each other as the canoe sprint competition begins at the Lagoa Stadium on Monday.
Lisa CARRINGTON (NZL) and Natasa DOUCHEV-JANIC (HUN) will race for a place in the semifinals. CARRINGTON comes into the Rio 2016 Olympic Games as the No.1-ranked female paddler while DOUCHEV-JANIC is returning to the Olympic Games after spinal surgery in 2014.
