Kenny Wallace and Lachlan Tame have moved within one win of securing nomination to the Australian Olympic team after winning the K2 1000 A final at the Oceania Sprint Championships and second Grand Prix in Adelaide today.

Today was the first of two selection trials for the K2 1000 with the second to follow at the National Sprint Championships in Perth next month.

The reigning World Championship silver medallists produced their trademark finish, powering home in the closing 250 metres to win in 3:16.63, 0.48 seconds ahead of Murray Stewart and Jacob Clear.

“Well it's Ken’s trademark but I have tried to copy it and I get a bit more excited, he is more controlled than me, I see him and catch up and I want to go but he just holds back the reigns and knows the right time when to go, and how much petrol we have got to get over the line and he times it well,” Tame said.

Wallace and Tame were made to work for their victory with under-23 world champions Riley Fitzsimmons and Jordan Wood another crew to challenge them. They eventually finished 1.51 seconds behind in third place.

“It is an awesome field, like the young guys were under-23 world champions last year, last time Muzz and Jake raced K2 at Worlds they were a top five or six crew, so it’s so good to have the depth in team boats here,” Wallace said.

“Our worst result we have ever had at any race here is a second place, so to come here and race against those guys is pretty good. We are looking forward to August pending all goes well.”

Wallace, who is chasing a third Olympic Games berth said the pair will not be resting with plenty of hard work to do to ensure they ‘hit their straps’ in Perth.

“We are going to have to try and go a little bit faster in March as sometimes the conditions in Perth can be a little better than here in Adelaide so we will definitely have to go faster and I think the pressure is going to be on everyone in the next race,” Wallace said.

The National canoe sprint Championships will be held at Champion Lakes in Perth from 2 to 6 March.
