The 44th edition of the Waterlands Marathon proved to be one of the toughest editions in the last five years. Where mild temperatures and sunshine favoured the recent editions, this year’s race took place in less favourable conditions of strong winds and the occasional rain shower. This provided all competitors with another challenge apart from surviving the mass starts and the challenging race course. Many athletes took unfortunate swims in the chilly conditions, all finished safely and some even managed to finish in top rankings despite swimming.

At the second portage José Leonel Ramalho managed to escape from Adrián Boros leading the race all the way to the finish line.  Adrián Boros took home the second place and Emilio Merchan Alonso finished in third place despite an unlucky swim.

Top favourite in the senior ladies Richmond Canoe Club paddler Lizzie Broughton, did not disappoint in these challenging conditions. She took home her third win in a row at the Amsterdam Waterland Marathon. Lucy Lee Smith (second) and Jennifer Klein finished four

The results of the Waterland Marathon follow the first Classic Series Race in South Africa however no competitors have completed both events so the series has not yet been contested.
